Ranch updates 31st March

LNC

Spoke briefly to Kuki this evening, she is ok.

SUYIAN RANCH

Operation continued on Suyian today – GSU up and about at 0530. They went  to the major boma sights and destroyed all the bomas.

OL MAISOR RANCH

Whole northern and eastern sides of Ol Maisor full of cattle. We counted about 50 herds from a drive around there now. A little water in the luggers from the rain which isn’t helping but will dry up soon. More cattle in today from both Suyian and LNC. Found a vandalized gate (even though it was open) and fence cut again today. Also Pokot still killing wildlife – especially zebra and buffalo.

Ol Maisor Ranch – update 30th March

Day 79 -of chaos, violence, mayhem, shooting etc or day 202 – Wednesday 29th

More stonewall building and reinforcing, more foot patrols and more boundary patrols….impounded flock of goats released on payment of fine and 5 boundary wall breaks repaired with some on Pesi section which has been unbroken for a couple of weeks. Following up on information received we learnt that some cattle had been stolen by 12 armed Samburu and Pokot from Hadji Musa on ADC. Together with the AP’s stationed here, others from Rumuruti and our NPR team we managed to recover all seven of them.  Huge thanks due to everyone involved and the great result.

Our thoughts are with Kuki, Sveva and Nigel andall the LNC staff as they too go through this horrendous wave of violence and destruction.

As the operation continues the situation gets more volatile on all the farms, with armed men seen leaving the operational space and moving back with livestock and firearms to previously and currently illegally occupied areas.

The enormity of the problem has been downplayed for so long, the KDF/Police operation is ongoing, and will take time as the area to cover is vast and the problem so much bigger than anyone believes. We have to stay positive and hope and pray that illegal guns will be collected, law and order will be restored, and peace will return to Laikipia – but there is still a long bumpy road ahead of us.

Ol Maisor, Sosian, Suyian, Naibor Ranches and LNC are all still under extreme pressure.

I would like to thank everyone for your huge support to all of us caught up in this chaos, it means a lot to all of us and while you might be feeling angry and frustrated over the whole thing, please try and comment with useful and supportive messages and comments and not get caught up and say stuff that just isn’t helpful or could inflame this already extremely delicate and volatile situation.

Yes this is now a drought – it wasn’t when all this started late last year ….now a convinient excuse…..it’s not about Kiangazi na Nyasi.

Please keep SHARING about what is going on in Laikipia

Suyian Ranch update – 29th March

This is what happened today.
Today operation started at about 1000. County commander with a mix of Police, KDF, AP, GSU and ASTU.
They seemed to concentrate on the western side of the main kirimon road.
They said their main objective was to collect illegal firearms and to make arrests.
About 3/400 cattle where captured and brought into the HQ also some motorcycles, and bicycles where collected.
The cattle where unfortunately lost in the dark when they where transferred to another boma away for HQ.
They’re tactic seemed to be to fire plenty of warning shots over the cattle and wait for retaliation. Then go in and capture cattle. No cattle shot on Suyian today. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Update – Suyian Ranch – 28th March

Morning flight –

Suyian has an increase now 373 herds × 170=63000 aprox. These herds are spread over 36 different locations.

Sosian now 64 herds ×170, 10800 a further 60 herds are in the Suyian count but grazing and watering on Sosian. Sosian boma’s very spread out.

Ol-Maisor now 37 herds also smaller × 150=5500. 20 of these are very scattered West of Corner Mbaya. Borehole south 2 herds, borehole West 13 and North 1, Corner dam 1 herd. Nasore dam still with water.

Day 78 -of chaos, violence, mayhem, shooting etc or day 201 – Tuesday 28th

More wall reinforcing ongoing and foot patrols on boundary and through the farm – only 2 breaks which is amazing ! But then the foot patrols reported in finding big herds of goats accompanied by at least one armed man. Police were alerted but the majority of the team have been away assisting with the operation and so couldn’t accompany the farm security and team of NPR’s who headed off and managed to take control of approx 700 head of goats which were driven back to the yards and locked up. The armed man seen, disappeared into thick bush.
