Day 79 -of chaos, violence, mayhem, shooting etc or day 202 – Wednesday 29th

More stonewall building and reinforcing, more foot patrols and more boundary patrols….impounded flock of goats released on payment of fine and 5 boundary wall breaks repaired with some on Pesi section which has been unbroken for a couple of weeks. Following up on information received we learnt that some cattle had been stolen by 12 armed Samburu and Pokot from Hadji Musa on ADC. Together with the AP’s stationed here, others from Rumuruti and our NPR team we managed to recover all seven of them.  Huge thanks due to everyone involved and the great result.

Our thoughts are with Kuki, Sveva and Nigel andall the LNC staff as they too go through this horrendous wave of violence and destruction.

As the operation continues the situation gets more volatile on all the farms, with armed men seen leaving the operational space and moving back with livestock and firearms to previously and currently illegally occupied areas.

The enormity of the problem has been downplayed for so long, the KDF/Police operation is ongoing, and will take time as the area to cover is vast and the problem so much bigger than anyone believes. We have to stay positive and hope and pray that illegal guns will be collected, law and order will be restored, and peace will return to Laikipia – but there is still a long bumpy road ahead of us.

Ol Maisor, Sosian, Suyian, Naibor Ranches and LNC are all still under extreme pressure.

I would like to thank everyone for your huge support to all of us caught up in this chaos, it means a lot to all of us and while you might be feeling angry and frustrated over the whole thing, please try and comment with useful and supportive messages and comments and not get caught up and say stuff that just isn’t helpful or could inflame this already extremely delicate and volatile situation.

Yes this is now a drought – it wasn’t when all this started late last year ….now a convinient excuse…’s not about Kiangazi na Nyasi.

Please keep SHARING about what is going on in Laikipia

  1. We were privileged to stay with Sean & Charlotte at Sosian and saw the hard work that went into maintaining such a vast estate. We are farmers ourselves and can appreciate how devastating it is when you have put so much effort into building up such a wonderful herd of cattle and safeguarding the game only to have it destroyed in just a few months. I do not understand why the government is not doing more to help you – we visited Kenya in 2008 for the first time and have subsequently visited many times since and just in that short time we have noticed how game has been driven out through so much building work and new roads. Can the powers that be not realise that people come to Kenya for the game and if it is not protected there will be no tourism.

I have followed your blog since I visited in February and all I can say to all of you is just keep going – you are doing an amazing job and just remember farmers are custodians of the land and it is only through all your determination and hard work that the farms can be restored again.

    Best wishes

    Neil & Karen Benson
