Mugie Ranch – 18th Oct

Just received from Mugie-

We have had a massive increase of Samburu cattle coming in all along our northern boundary despite the good rain we have had. This is an indication of the numbers;

Security morning report.

Kitienya – lowakipi :Post no 242, 285, 299 & 301 herd of cattle in/out

Logurate line: From post 195 to 509 herd of cattle in/out.

Letikon line :From Post no 82 to post no 351 all those areas herd of cattle in/out.

The MCA Wamba has been threatening the ASTU comander over the Samburu cattle we are holding over the issue of threatening our guys with guns on the northern boundary!

Day 365 plus +/- 5 weeks – Tuesday 17th October

Sadly not such a positive week here

 – illegal grazing at night has started up again with Samburu cattle and armed ‘herders’ coming in at night from across the Pesi River near Matigari. About 70 head of cattle came in on Saturday night and were monitored, Patrol teams and NPR teams were in place on Sunday night and a heavy exchange of fire took place. Thankfully all teams returned home safe.

Elephants continue to hide out here in big numbers, sadly crop raiding small holder farmers not too far from our boundarys  – luckily we had made the decision not to plant any crops this season due to fence and machinery damage caused by invaders earlier in the year and the addition of the elephants.

Picture taken through binos – a herd of 98 seen in the abandoned crop land!

Nanyuki side seems to be getting some much needed rain finally and photo taken this afternoon just off the tarmac from Nanyuki heading back towards Rumuruti

Mugie Ranch – 17th October

Just received from Mugie –

Last night dozens and dozens of herds came in. The Samburu have been met with impunity at every turn and it seems that the security situation is degrading in steps. The government seem to have little will to step in and put an end to this.

As yet those who came on with seven guns have yet to openly show themselves as the owners of the herd. They just send the Chief of Logorate and Suguta Marmar in as representatives and who negotiate on their behalf.

Two other herds arrested today and their owners went to Rumuruti Police station.

Tomorrow our security team members will be giving evidence in court against sandalwood poachers we arrested a few months ago.
Otherwise, we have had a pause in the rain and baling commenced again today.

Mugie Ranch – 15th Oct

Just received from Mugie –

Two days later and the impounded cattle are still with us. We have said alongside the local ASTU commander that if we are to return the cattle, then we want them to submit the 7 guns that were used to intimidate our security team.

Several of the local chiefs from Samburu county have come to present excuses – but no one is willing to admit any culpability as yet. This is typical of the Samburu community attitude.

The ASTU commander takes no nonsense and this is the first Louniek Commander that really follows through. We hope to see more of this positive influence in the area.

Mugie Ranch – 13th Oct

Just received from Mugie

A herd of approx 300 Samburu cattle came in 1030hrs from the Logorate area (north). Mugie patrols captured the herd but then Samburu returned with 7gunmen to retrieve the herd. A joint patrol of Mugie NPR and ASTU then cut off the escape of the herd. An ambush was laid by the Samburu for our joint patrol but detected. The gunmen ran away and approx 100 cattle from the illegal grazing herd were impounded by ASTU.
